Alex Eala Eyes Pan Pacific Open Semifinal Spot in Showdown With Diana Shnaider

Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is set for another showdown against Russian player Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan.

The highly anticipated match is scheduled for Friday, although the official start time has yet to be announced. Eala will be looking to avenge her recent loss to Shnaider and secure a place in the semifinals of the WTA 500 tournament.

Eala Eyes Redemption Against Shnaider After Ningbo Open Loss

Eala previously faced Shnaider in the Round of 16 of the Ningbo Open on October 22, where the Filipino suffered a heartbreaking 7-5, 6-4 defeat. Despite putting up a strong fight, Eala struggled to maintain her momentum toward the end of both sets.

Shnaider, a 22-year-old Russian currently ranked No. 13 in the world, acknowledged Eala’s offensive strength after their first encounter. She also pointed out the challenges of competing against another left-handed player.

“Her offensive ability is very strong. She often has to go to the bottom of the line and I felt a lot of pressure,” Shnaider said following their match in China. “It’s never easy to play another lefty. So, yeah, it’s not very often.”

Eala Advances With Comeback Victory

Eala advanced to the Pan Pacific Open quarterfinals after a commanding comeback victory over Australia’s Talia Gibson. After dropping the opening set 4-6, the Filipina bounced back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-0.

Meanwhile, Shnaider secured her quarterfinal spot after defeating Belarusian player Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3, in a challenging three-set match.

Strong Start in Tokyo

Eala began her Tokyo campaign with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic.

Her strong performance has marked her deepest run during the Asian Swing, following a series of early tournament exits against lower-ranked opponents.

The quarterfinal appearance also represents an important step for Eala as she continues to build on her breakthrough season, highlighted by her title run at the DC Open.

Eala Prepares for Final Tournaments of the Season

Currently ranked No. 19 in the world, Eala is determined to make the most of her penultimate tournament of the season.

Following the Pan Pacific Open, she is scheduled to compete in the Hong Kong Tennis Open next week.

With a place in the semifinals at stake, Eala will have another opportunity to showcase her talent, improve her record against Shnaider, and continue her impressive rise in women’s professional tennis.
